Duck buckets and Rock'n'Roll

the Longshots bandwagon rolled into the tropical north once more, after hearing tales of a 'duck bucket' at a local chinese eatery. A full investigation revealed some top shelf duckery, despite Hobbesy' attempt to drown le canard in vin rouge. However, blame cannot be laid entirely at the feet (or paws) of this drum playing tiger, as LR goaded him with the lazy susan, whisking chinese delicacies past him at a great rate.

Earlier, the 'Shots managed to educate two local ring-ins as to exactly how we roll, resulting in a stellar performance come saturday night. The newest member of the 'Shots managerie, Freebie, got straight into the action sniffing out the contents of various vessels and bowls. Saturday night saw a cracker of a line-up at the NQ Roots Connection, where Bandawalla Moons, lonesome trio, Longshots and Pachooka cranked out a night of high energy roots music to the music lovin punters of the north.

Despite the Horlicks twins disappearance into the sunrise, Longshots managed to roll onto Jamaica Joe's for a very Sunday set. All in all, another fine chapter in the book of Longshottery. A large shout out to NQ Roots Connection for putting on such a fine event, in particular 'I'm all business Smithy' who dealt with the limp dicked manager on the night with style and aplomb, especially when things went all Blues Brothers in the wee small hours; "well i owe you boys $200 and you drank $500 worth of beer...". Was sensational to have the vocal stylings of Miss Bree Dixon and the gaelic reed blowin of Monsieur Clem Fay on stage with us, both of which added a new dimension to the Lonshots sound.

This blog seems to have ever-increasing appetites which I am endevouring to satisfy. Somewhat like Audrey II, the carnivorous alien plant in Little Shop of Horrors. Which makes me Seymour I guess. This latest piece of plant food or human flesh or whatever popped up as an accident - strangely enough I was actually keen to do something really different with an electronic sort of bent to it, but in the end I just had to "blow". Inspired somewhat by my recent completion of On The Road, which by the way I highly recommend to anyone who hasn't read it since their twenties (it's a different book now), or to anyone in their twenties, or to anyone that hasn't read it period. But I digress. The demo includes a decidedly unfashionable guitar pig out inspired by the novel. Whether it makes the studio version of the song remains to be seen. REVIEW Pt 1 –I’m Already Scarred and It's Only Friday

The Longshots are more a “collective” as opposed to the traditional Buddy Holly and the Crickets notion of a band i.e., guitars in hand on a bus or a plane on the road to nowhere or oblivion or somewhere (not for long - Ed.). And they have recorded a debut Double album/CD “New Wine in Old Bottles/I’m Already Scarred and Its Ónly Friday”. The references to livers and looseness are not implied at any stage in this “Longshots” world –its all in your face.
The album cover (a painting by the sublime artist Chris Worfold) is an apt introduction to this “gonzo” recording that at first listen is totally true to the nature of its surroundings - the most eastern part of the Antipodes. But multiple listens uncover much more depth and beauty, which is the objective of any good record I s’pose.
This listener opted for the second title as first course and was greeted by a ramshackle pure country pop “O Jeff Tweedy” , from a Steve Miller-esque guitar opening and honky piano completed with hoarse vocals of Mr Trent Christie, O Jeff is a song in the best traditions of the whiter country end of New Orleans (pre flood) a “rouser”. The Longshots are salty pirates and nowhere does this seem more obvious than on this track.
To be Francis or frank “O Jeff T” is one of the more lightweight numbers here and perhaps one that pales near the tighter and snappier songs such as Naked, Away from the Sun, Painless and Vintage; Painless is a percussive, organ laden sound track to a chicken beheading in a cane field if I ever heard one. Painless is a response to the “O Jeff Tweedy” call or maybe a rum-coke can desert to the aforementioned beer song. Either way I am not sure they like Jeff Tweedy or not and mystery is a good thing. Naked is a drumming, rocking, beer barn orgasm, parts early 80s Aus rock, part Deadhead bliss complete with space Korg lift off. Have these guys considered groupies? ... nah. Along with “Wild card man” solid husky rock traditions are tipped a hat brim here. We likey, love it loooongtime.
A key ingredient in this gonzo gumbo gris gris is the production of Dan Rowan, recovering from the potentially devastating loss of little Neve, Dan has bounced back with superb considered production and engineering form. He possesses a rare ear for layering and space that brings simple pleasures and the best out of some rather tasty, tried and test raw materials – fender telecasters, dry snares, old martins, rusty bass strings, les ladies backing vox, and the odd glass of Jack and ice.
Daniel-san himself brings solid and versatile vocal stylings that anchor this work with ennui meets nonplussed landscape lyrics. “One-Eyed Jack” in particular showcases a talented musician, artist and songwriter. Lead vox are shared across this record and this adds variety, in a good way, these guys don’t really care as long as you get “the vibe your honour”. Justice is in the cake not just the ingredients.
“Storm in a Gin Jug” “Crisp Summer Riesling” and “Late Blooming” are the shade to the above mentioned tracks ‘white piercing light’, light needs shade, hot needs cold. One that couldn’t sit under the tree but out on the clay pan was “Travellin”, a builder complete with fender tele and whoo earrings. It is a ceaseless Congo man drum beating complete with white man pining. “Vintage” follows this with a similar build and break-it-down structure locked around a very Daniel Craig tough guitar, here is a musical element that is like a bitch fight in a Hong Kong bowling alley, you just have to watch/listen and be enthralled and shake your head at the impossibility of life and agree that the answer to the universe is 42. (By the way Daniel Craig being the first James Bond who could take a kick in the balls – even Connery ponces around compared to Daniel Craig). That sliding tonal beauty grinds out and completes a very solid set that is “I’m Already Scarred…”. There is much ear candy here comrades.
Who would you file the Longshots under? Well this is proving difficult, the gender is definitely XY, the dating agency spin would probably mention “traditional male seeks wild woman for rum and coke and mojito binges near sand and water” or “when I’m good I’m good, when I’m bad I’m better”. Musically there is New Orleans, there is Gram and orange groves, there is wild man 50s rock and cars with fins, there is Highway One acceleration. There is definitely plenty of Hunter S Thompson-isms but more Rum Diary-era Hunter and sea breezes and less Vegas and rifles. Oh and did I mention the Fender Teles?
Not everything on this album is perfect, when combined with another album (see forthcoming review) there are songs that, ala Pavement and their similarly gris gris gumbo/Beefheart-esque release Wowee Zowee, or Bob Pollard and his never ending four track releases, might not have been missed but hey as a document of a time and place of this “band” of individuals it will wear long and well. Congratulations on the tones Longshots, and if anything this recording screams bring on the next album.

The Sandman

I don't have time unfortunately to create the requisite 70's style film clip in my trademark amateur style, so the music will have to stand alone this time. The track was born of a patently obvious desire to create some old-school feel-good guitar rock after watching Dazed and Confused - lyrics are largely thanks to Esmerelda, who also contributed backing vocals along with Tiny Dancer.

The big news at the moment is that the new album is now just about written - we've got over an hour of potential material. We'll use our upcoming gigs (TBA) to road test and tighten the new stuff and then head into the studio later this year. Also we're putting the Launch footage together so all those who couldn't make it can get a taste of the experience. Many who were there may need a little reminder also. Lastly, we'll be looking at putting a proper film clip together so the voting is open - which track would you like to see as the single off the Double Debut? Somehow the last week and a half has smudged by without me even noticing. The launch, dream that it was, is behind us. A future of more frequent Longshots gigs lies ahead. Lookout Sydney and the Tropical North, because you're next. I had hoped to be posting some video footage of the Launch gig, but that will have to wait. In the meantime, in the quiet shadow of the recent fearsome storm of liquid musical activity, with a bottle of JD for company, I plucked out this little number on my sardine tin kalimba. The footage is mostly from August 07, deep in the trenches recording "I'm Already Scarred and It's Only Friday".

Longshots love a bit of culture. Especially a culture that embraces ideals close to our hearts, like fine food and wine. Take for example the French. Sure they may get underhanded when it comes to lying on the bottom of a ruck, or perhaps a little overwrought in the heat of the moment and simply headbutt you in front of millions... Or forget to finish a heavily fortified defensive line, thinking with a gaelic shrug of the shoulders, "les boches, zey will never break zhru zat.." thus leaving themselves open to a simple flanking manoeuvre through Belgium. But sweet baby jesus, they know how to make wine. And they don't fuck around either. We're not talking your 700ml bottle here. Oh no. If they gonna bottle some wine, then they're gonna do the job properly and we're talking 1.5 (count 'em) 1.5 litres of devine, bottled goodness. Ladies and gentlemen, raise your berets to a 2001 Chateau le Vieille Forge....

As a post script this kind of wine is made even more impressive when presented to you by your girlfriends parents at your first introduction... vive la france!!

I have discovered this week just how reliant I have become on the studio as a writing tool. There was a time when I would write happily with just the guitar or the piano, but these days it seems I'm creatively addicted to the process of layering tracks as I write. It's like having to work with one black crayon after becoming accustomed to having the whole palette at your disposal. I have discovered this due to the failure of the studio computer - I'm still deciding how disturbed to be by this revelation. Still if this is all I've got to whinge about, I'm doing just fine. Anyhoo, had to dig one up from the vault this week, it's another demo from the next album - "Bought A Ticket".

PS Esmerelda has hit the lead in the S14, while the contrarians at the bottom of the table (you know who you are) enjoyed the generous smattering of upsets this round....

Goddamn I thought I had that one. Come Sunday morning when I realised that I'd picked seven out of seven with a miserly margin difference of two, I thought to myself - "Now that's tipping behartches". And yet I'm here to report that in one of the great tipping rounds OF ALL TIME, Fucken Don't Punch Me Kovaks has produced an almost unbeatable effort to take the round. 7/7 with a margin diff of only 1 little point. That's the sound of the bar being set very high lads.

Overall, Marvel (aka Spacecow) is holding the lead on margin from yours truly, and Hobbsie continues to bring his poker style to the tipping comp, with a combined total of two correct tips.

We have a new player in the comp, a rookie by the name of FynnDe who is holding her own amongst the wily veterans with a very respectable 9 point tally.

And now for this week's musical interlude. It's an attempt to ward off Mondayitis and worked pretty well on that front. Tiny Dancer's genius 'hidden camera' footage of Sunday night's Super 8 shennanigans asks the age old question: "How many winos does it take to thread a Super 8 projector?"

Tropical stylin ain't all its cracked up to be. Sure, we got the reef on our doorstep, rainforest just up the road. But the downside to this is the wet season. So called because its, well... wet. Very wet. So much so that during a thunderstorm yesterday (as different to the usual incessant monsoonal downpours), Toontown recorded 44mm in hour. Doesn't seem like much hey, but lets put that in perspective... Historically Brownsville gets an average of 125.7mm rainfall in dec, 268.5mm in jan and 296.6 in feb. So far this year we've had: 178.8mm in dec, 664.0mm in jan, and so far in feb we've had 845.8mm and its only the 17th!! Makes u wonder whether its gettin all biblical on us... maybe we need an ark... or more in keeping with the times (and Longshots love of mass transport - see previous blogs on jets and chinooks), maybe we need to get our hands on one of these little puppies...

that way hobbesy and i can be guarrenteed of making it to the launch!!

Eastern Shots

Well once again the Longshots blew into Byron last weekend, in the wake of Hobbsie's marvellous Leonard Cohen adventure avec Peace Frog. Marvel was fortuitously in the neighbourhood, and you can't keep Esmerelda out of the mix once you have that sort of momentum. Needless to say, a good time was had by all. Although it depends to some extent on your definition of fun. Lawn bowls and beer drinking, for instance, are fun.

Whether or not, however, you would call locating and removing a snake from your daughter's bedroom a good time is really a matter of personal preference. I attach a photo of Hobbsie and myself in reptile hunting mode.

In the end it was only about 3 feet of angry tree snake, but the relief was still tangible once he was removed from the equation. In amongst the frivolities we managed to bang out a demo for one of Hobbsie's tunes. It features the dancing digits of Marvel on the piano, begging the question - is there anything this cow can't play?

Anyhoo, without further ado, I give you the first draft of "Summer in the Mediterranean".

S14 is Underway

Footy is back. And with no top line sport to enjoy since the SCG test, it couldn't come soon enough.

The first round saw the Longshots tipping comp spread out alarmingly (for some) with Trunksy taking the honours with a very toit 6 wins, taking the week's honours from Marvel on margin. Dishonourable mention to Hobbsie with a lowly 2 wins. Good to see Fucken Don't Punch Me Kovaks and Andy "Brain" Paine step up to the plate. Even better to have both players confirmed for the upcoming Launch of the double debut on March 14 in Bangalow, which is shaping up as a ripper. Brain played and sung beautifully on several tracks on Old Wine In New Bottles, while FDPM looks to be contributing some gold for the upcoming release Ice Cream for Freaks.

Longshots ebay item of the week.

Longshots have never let the tyranny of distance get in the way of making some sweet fucking rock n roll. However, the recent Tropical Shots excursion allowed the lads to pontificate over ways of making the whole process a little easier.

Despite Hobbesy's enthusiasm for a recently retired 737 jet (apparently going very cheap these days!), it was decided that he didn't have the necessary skills, or licence to drop it into the Valley, for storage, upon purchase.

The next best thing will be a Chinook chopper. Once the essential modifications (sound-proofing, bar and piano for the Reverend and Stevie) are made...we would be right to rock - anytime, anywhere.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be too many of the genuine articles around the place...So if anyone hears of Chinook for sale...please contact Dan @ hard8.

Tropical Shots

It was hard thirsty work, but the weather gods smiled their benevolence as the monsoon swirled around Brownsville making the A/C jacket (see below) superfulous. 14 hours were spent in the jam room thrashing out backbone of the launch set, as well as working up some tunes for the sneaky saturday night set at the house of Pachooka! The punters lapped up the Tropical Shots and the boys then retired to the green room where Dan found the comfort of the couch corner under the aircon too much to resist. Highlights of the weekend were definately all of the jammin', seeing a French lass don the Australian Gold jersey, and the 'get fucked flop' of all time in the Friday nite poker game.

Marvel and Dan head north to the tropical belt this coming friday 23rd Jan. Longshots refuse to let the tyranny of distance prevail and are determined to have at least one rehearsal under their belts before the March launch.
